Why the Raven?
Some see a Raven as a bird of ill-omen, but its mythology is more complex. Ravens are highly intelligent, often taking the form of a guider of souls – connectors of the material and spiritual worlds. They have been guardians, protecting the vulnerable, warriors, and even nations. If the ravens leave the Tower of London, England will be lost.
In Norse mythology, the great god Odin had two ravens – Huginn and Munnin – representing ‘thought’ and ‘memory.’ They are creatures of prophecy and learning, and often associated with a warrior’s courage.
When we seek therapy we can feel like a lost soul seeking new understanding and guidance. We can be vulnerable and afraid. Therapy itself can be hard, painful work – as well as uplifting, enlightening and poweful. What better symbol than a raven to illustrate the warrior nature of therapeutic work, and to encapsulate the tools of thought, memory, courage, and enlightenment that are so valuable in therapy.
